The recent break in diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran is alarming. It brings a dangerous new level of instability to the region. The two nations represent the nominal heads of Sunni and Shia Islam, and have been tilting for regional influence for many years. The underlying causes for the devolution of relations are not particularly important. There are always reasons for Sunni and Shia to be at each other’s throats. The seeds of hate and distrust were sown in Islam’s early history and do not take much to be coaxed into blooming.
